Stuff I’ve Worked On

Below is a list - from most recent to least recent - of projects I’ve been involved in, in various capacities. A number of them are run through my production company, Roulette Productions, which is available for for-hire work. I’m also open to joining existing productions. I’m flexible, is the point.

What Now? w/ Trevor Noah

(Ongoing) | Day Zero Productions

I’m the Executive Producer of Trevor Noah’s weekly podcast, working with a brilliant team of producers and closely with Trevor’s production company Day Zero. I joined the show just before Trevor turned 40, and convened a wonderful conversation with two of his friends. If you want to check out the show, that’s a great place to start. It’s available everywhere.

The Puzzler w/ A.J. Jacobs

(Fall 2023) | iHeart Podcasts

Roulette productions is making this show, with me as EP, for iHeart Podcasts in collaboration with Neuhaus Ideas and, of course, the great A.J. Jacobs. It’s a short daily show, bringing you fun audio puzzles to play along with at home. This has been very fun to produce, and making a daily show is quite the production challenge. Shoutout to producer Brittani Brown. More on this soon, but there’s a whole Puzzler empire brewing. Stay tuned…

Death On The Lot / Death At The Wing

(Spring 2023; Spring 2021) | Hyperobject Industries, SONY Podcasts

I am Executive Producer and series editor for a series hosted by Adam McKay (Big Short, Succession, Anchorman, tons more). It’s probably the most audacious project I’ve worked on, built around the idea that you can use tragedy within a small world to explain key eras in American history.

Good Sport

(Spring 2023) | TED Audio Collective

I’m hosting a new show from the TED Audio Collective called “Good Sport.” It’s an argument, of sorts, that sports is a great lens through which to understand the world and ourselves. The first season is eight episodes, exploring stadium deals, mental toughness, gender divides, aging and more. I’ve also tried to open up a bit more in this series than in my other work. I think there’s some good stuff in there.

This Day In Esoteric Political History

(Ongoing) | Radiotopia

Part of the Radiotopia network of independent podcasts. Three times a week, historians Nicole Hemmer, Kellie Carter Jackson, and I are joined by guests to discuss one moment from our political past that may have lessons for our very rocky present.

Hark

(Ongoing)

I’m one of the regular hosts — along with the great Avery Trufelman — for Hark Daily, which curates some of the best podcast moments every day. Find me in the Hark app, which is a great way to discover new shows and keep up on your podcast listening.

You Get A Podcast! (formerly known as Oprahdemics)

(Ongoing) | Radiotopia

Half re-watch show, half cultural analysis. A look at the impact of Oprah Winfrey and some of her most iconic moments, from historians Kellie Carter Jackson and Leah Wright Rigueur. This was born from an episode we did on This Day about Oprah, and I’ve been serving as EP/Show-runner to launch the show for Radiotopia. It’s a blast. Also, look at that artwork!

Pro-Democracy Podcast Coalition

(Spring 2022, Ongoing)

Like many people, I’m alarmed by the growing threats to our democracy, and am thinking about ways to try to help ensure an inclusive democracy in this country. I began to reach out to fellow podcast hosts, producers, and networks to ask them to lend their voice to a campaign and take a stand. We then partnered with the good-government group RepresentUS to help coordinate campaigns and messages. So far, we’ve got hundreds of shows with a reach of millions signed up, and have begun to roll out messages. I’m proud of everyone who has lent their support and decided to use their platform at this critical moment.

Audacy: The Run, Unwritten, Hey Mayne, etc..

(2021-2022) | Audacy, MLB

I have a development/production deal with Audacy’s new 2400Sports division. I’m helping them cook up ideas, pilot, and executive produce the first run of shows. These are largely studio shows, but more historical and narrative as opposed to current analysis. A number of these projects fall under a deal Audacy has with Major League Baseball.

  • The Run looks back at the magical 2016 Cubs World Series run. The concept here is to treat a postseason run as a narrative event, almost like a TV season. It’s hosted by the fantastic duo of Matt Spiegel and Roy Wood, Jr.

  • Unwritten is an idea I’ve had for a long time and now it’s being brought to life by Ron Darling and Jimmy Rollins (go Phils). Each episode breaks down one of baseball’s unwritten rules and puts it in historical context, alongside great stories and guests.

  • Hey Mayne, aka The Kenny Mayne Talks to Famous People Podcast (he insists on that subtitle). A chance to work with the brilliant and wry Kenny Mayne on a show that goes deep with sports, cultural and political figures. A great interview show: it’s still one of the best things.

The Line

(Spring 2021) | Apple TV+, Jigsaw Productions

I was story editor a new series from Dan Taberski about the trial of Eddie Gallagher and what the forever wars are doing to Navy SEALS, and us, the people who send them to fight. This is one of the first big original podcast projects from Apple, and is being done in collaboration with Jigsaw Productions, who are producing a documentary film in conjunction. I’m very proud to have played a part on an important story with a really stellar team led by Dan. Also honored that the series was recognized with a Dupont award.

Beyond The Last Dance

(Summer 2020) | Pushkin Industries, Audible

I served as Executive Producer for a 10-part series from Audible, Pushkin Industries, and NBA Entertainment. The series used The Last Dance as a jumping off point for essays and conversations about Michael Jordan, the Bulls, teamwork, competitiveness, sports and activism, and more.

Coach Speak

(Summer 2020) | Ultiworld

A quarantined-at-home podcast series I hosted about coaching in Ultimate Frisbee. Made with Ultiworld, and basically my excuse to talk to some of the best coaches in the sport. In my opinion, there’s stuff in here about teamwork and leadership that would be of interest to people who don’t play Ultimate. Either way, I had a blast.

30-for-30-logo.png

30for30 Podcasts

(2016-2020) | ESPN

I was host, series editor, lead producer and manager for 30 for 30 Podcasts from ESPN from its development in 2016 through early 2020.

fivethirtyeight-logo.jpg

FiveThirtyEight Podcasts

(2015-2019) | ESPN, ABC

I was the original podcast producer and host of the FiveThirtyEight politics podcast, as well as other podcast efforts as part of Nate Silver’s data journalism site.

What’s The Point

(2015-2017) | ESPN, ABC

A show I hosted for FiveThirtyEight about how data affects our lives, from attempts to catalog the history of symphonies to the challenges in collecting data around police shootings. Plus I got to ask strangers on the street about random numbers.

AskRouette14kSquare.jpg

Ask Roulette

(2014-2018)

A storytelling and comedy live show and podcast, in which strangers ask each other questions on stage. I conceived of and hosted this show for several years, with a residency at Housing Works Bookstore in New York City.

WNYC

(2008-2015)

I was a producer at the Brian Lehrer Show at WNYC, and worked on a number of other shows and special projects in my seven years at WNYC public radio.
