Speaking and Moderating

I love working with organizations to help take their events to the next level. I offer a number of services.

Talks and Workshops

I’ve done dozens of talks and workshops building on my work around the lessons that sports can offer for ourselves and our world, so that attendees can better fit into teams, and lead teams, in the workplace and elsewhere.

Over my life and career, I’ve used sports as a lens to learn important lessons about leadership, teamwork, self-improvement, and success. My five years at ESPN and work with TED has brought me in close contact with top athletes, coaches, and sports psychologists. I’ve got excellent stories from a wide variety of sports settings to reinforce key points in my keynotes, workshops, and moderator roles.

In my talks, I offer a mix of research, reporting, and lessons from my own time playing and coaching and leading teams. My goal is to use this experience to surprise, delight, inform and inspire your audience.

I’ve facilitated small leadership workshops, given talks at large conferences, hosted social content, and more.

My signature talks are:

  • My favorite and least favorite sports cliches

    • Some cliches are cliches for a reason. I offer universal lessons about teamwork, self-improvement, and how to build a satisfying team culture

  • How to get your team on the right “carousel of culture”

    • One of the hardest things for any leader or coach to do is figure out a group’s culture and how the individuals can buy in to a larger project. Here I offer lessons for how to create a culture of achievement

  • What to really look for when you’re watching sports, to help your own team

    • When I watch sports, I don’t just watch the ball — I look at the bench. How are teammates interacting with each other? How are the coaches navigating the game? Here I offer specific examples and connect them to the workplace and our personal lives.

Professional Moderator and Fireside Chat Interviewer

In my time at WNYC, FiveThirtyEight, ESPN and with TED, I’ve developed a lane as a fair, lively, curious moderator and seasoned interviewer on a wide range of subjects, from politics to media and culture and beyond.

And I put in the work. I love suggesting possible guests (or getting to know the guests you’ve selected); researching the most compelling topics in your panel's area of focus; drawing out the best in your guests; and giving them space to bounce ideas off each other.

I’ll take your panel discussion or on-stage interview to the next level — if I do my job, your audience will be on the edge of their seat, not checking their phones.
